The First World War – Turning Point
World War I brought unprecedented technical developments, particularly in the field of aviation. This resulted in innovations in the fields of geodesy, cartography, aerial photography, optics, and geography as a whole. These new sciences revolutionized the nature of warfare. They significantly altered the course of a conflict that began as a political misunderstanding and, with its unimaginable dimensions in all areas of life at the time, became the interface between the traditional and the modern.

Legend
Contemporary and current photographs, regimental histories, position maps, aerial photographs, and geospatial data primarily concerning the battlefields of Verdun, the Argonne, as well as the Saint-Mihiel salient and along the Chemin des Dames are intended to illustrate the military-historical dimensions of this era, this war, and its legacies. Even more than 100 years later, they can still be found everywhere in the landscape of eastern France.

The focus of the website www.morthomme.com lies on the presentation of selected topics off the beaten tourist track and on previously largely unaddressed, yet interesting aspects in the context of major historical developments. Individual locations, events, and personal fates are to be placed into the overall context of general historical, political, and military development. Thus, those interested in military history are offered incentives to engage more broadly with the respective topic and for a more intensive, cross-thematic observation and experience on-site.
If you have questions about individual topics, are looking for help with your research or tour preparation, or would like to support me with suggestions, improvement proposals, or further information, I look forward to hearing from you.
