le Mont –
Wächterberg between the Côtes de Lorraine and the Woëvre plain
An exploration of le Mont can begin, for example, from the village of Varnéville. From there, one follows a field path in a southerly direction. Thus, in the area of the western forward-positioned elevation “le Petit Saussaimont”, which the Germans called Katzenbuckel, one reaches the artillery bunker described in the main article. From there, one follows the field/forest path uphill in an easterly direction and reaches the area of the German positions on the crest of the ridge.

Alternatively, due to the beautiful view, a route starting from the village of Loupmont is also recommended. The village, heavily destroyed during the fighting, lay as part of the Friedrich Zone in the outpost zone of the le Mont position. It was crisscrossed and surrounded by fire trenches and bunkers. One parks and starts in front of the mairie in the area of the French war memorial. From here, one takes the path to the right past the mairie towards the church. Then one proceeds diagonally up through meadows and orchards to the high ground.

An association of hiking enthusiasts based in Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel, which calls itself “LES AMIS DES COTES”, has marked a hiking trail on le Mont using small plaques on trees. This can be followed heading north, as it runs for a considerable distance along interesting German position remains. After a circular walk over the heights, you return to the starting point in Varnéville or Loupmont after about 3 hours.
