Pagny-sur-Moselle – Then and Now

The photograph taken in 1915 in Pagny-sur-Moselle on today’s Rue Nivoy shows members of the Infanterie-Regiments „Markgraf Karl“ (7. Brandenburgisches) Nr. 60 (60th Infantry Regiment), whose garrison during World War I was located in the Alsatian town of Weissenburg (today Wissembourg). Starting in 1915, the regiment’s quartering locations alongside Pagny-sur-Moselle were the small village of Prény and the “Grolman Camp” south of Vilcey-sur-Trey, named after the commander of the 41. Ersatz-Infanterie-Brigade (41st Ersatz Infantry Brigade), Friedrich Wilhelm von Grolman. As part of the 241. Infanterie-Brigade (241st Infantry Brigade), the regiment was engaged from May 1915 in the heavy fighting in the area of the Priesterwald (Croix des Carmes), before it was thrown into the Battle of Verdun in March 1916.
